PORTER-CABLE 7424XP Review.

I purchased the Porter-Cable 7424XP 6-Inch Variable Speed polisher for working on detailing my automobiles. The variable speed and powerful motor have been a dream in accomplishing my tasks on polishing my cars with ease and speed. I have also used this polisher to bring my aluminum wheels back to full shine and could not be happier with this product.

PORTER-CABLE 7424XP Features And Specifications:

  • Random-orbit, swirl-free sanding/polishing action
  • Electronic variable-speed dial from 2,500-6,800 OPM
  • Features a proprietary counter balance for use with 6-inch sanding/polishing pad
  • Accepts 5/16 - 24 spindle thread accessories

I use the lower speeds for better finishes and the higher speeds for more damaged finishes (which need more polishing work). The higher speeds also work well for restoring headlights. I use a set of Uber 6" foam pads with a hook and loop back plate with great success.

I have been doing machine detailing now for almost two years, and I must say I can't detail without it anymore. First off, it cuts the detailing time in half or even more. You get a nice even distribution, and also fantastic quality work.

Porter-Cable 7424XP Technical Details

An important tip for beginners:

If operated on full speed it will do absolutely nothing. Turn the speed down to no more than half. The technical reason is that, when using this oscillating/orbital system, the mass inertia and friction of the pad does not allow the pad-to-paint surface to catch up with the oscillating inputs from the tool.

Pros:

  • Easily Accessible Power Switch (This is one of the most important things in a polisher),
  • Durable and strong design,
  •  Variable speeds for waxing, polishing and cutting,
  •  Handle can be installed on either side of the device,
  •  Does not get hot,
  • comfort and control,

Cons:

  • Doesn't come pre-packaged with a hook and loop plate,
  •  Loud ,
  •  The product is a bit small. If you look at some of the higher end polishers, like the Flex, you will see that the butt of the polisher is nice and long to give you a good grip angle between the butt and the handle. Again, not a big deal, but should be noted.

After years of waxing cars by hand and not having much free time, finally opted for a buffer to speed up the process. This has cut my time in half when waxing my vehicles. The pad that comes with it is pretty decent, and have it used it multiple times. The variable speed helps when trying to take out scratches or imperfections in the paint. Use this with some rubbing compound to fix several sets of hazy headlights too.
